Neil Gaiman: Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming

Neil Gaiman: Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming

A lecture explaining why using our imaginations, and providing
for others to use theirs, is an obligation for all citizens

67e788d9da458ed2ff8f78591155b2cfFiction can show you a different world. It can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Once you’ve visited other worlds, like those who ate fairy fruit, you can never be entirely content with the world that you grew up in. Discontent is a good thing: discontented people can modify and improve their worlds, leave them better, leave them different.

Another way to destroy a child’s love of reading, of course, is to make sure there are no books of any kind around. And to give them nowhere to read those books.

My lovely fellow bloggers in crime TarnZ recently mentioned Neil Gaiman in her post called These comics Won’t Rot your brain they will Expand it. I recent came across this speech by Neil Gaiman and thought I would share it with you. The speech in it’s entirety can be found here on The Guardian and it is very thought-provoking. Make sure out to check out  my Sistah from anotha Mistah TarnishedSophia.

  1. Much luv and many thanks to you, MrMary! I recently saw this speech too…By the Gods, there’s just so many good reasons to read (and listen to) everything that comes out of this man’s exquisite mind. Seriously, I believe he may actually be a Deity of Literature made flesh, his writings are so delicious and new.

  2. Oh boy, that’s crappy news! Sorry to hear about your beloved, so so sad. Heartfelt wishes for speedy recovery.

I thought if you liked Neil Gaiman you might like his wife, Amanda Palmer. She is a stunningly talented musician. You can find her stuff on YouTube. Might want to check out her music, to say nothing of her take on the industry etc…
