Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people, in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an incorrect or deviant decision-making outcome. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative ideas or viewpoints. Loyalty to the group requires individuals to avoid raising controversial issues or alternative solutions. The dysfunctional group dynamics produces an “illusion of invulnerability” (inflated certainty that the right decision has been made). The primary socially negative cost of groupthink is the loss of individual creativity, uniqueness, and independent thinking.
Mass Media & Group Think
The mass media are diversified media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. The media is dominated by five major companies (Time Warner, VIACOM, Vivendi Universal, Walt Disney and News Corp) which own 95% of all mass media.
I feel that there exists a kind of group think amongst mass media especially given how they are dominated by five major companies only. Mass media is a business. Their bottomline isn’t adherence to fact or journalistic integrity, rather it is turning a profit.
They amplify the disinformation in such a way as to divide people into arguing factions. Look at the 2012 Presidential Elections , the fact that Independant Fact-Checking was so perfusive made me wonder. The one thing they all agree on is making profit and will send out antagonistic and confusing spins on facts purposefully to keep us divided and arguing.
Imagine that for a minute the public is so removed and happy to be blissfully unaware that they can be lied to, misinformed rather to such a high level that independent fact-checking groups have to go over speeches and paraphernalia to let us know what real and what’s not and even then facts didnt matter much.
That’s how I see it at least, Im rather cynical and skeptical of the political process. What do you think?
