Any Suggestions for the following Biergartens ?

I plan on celebrate some monumental achievement with friends ( an empty beer glass and aneantissement as is said in French) The only places fit for such wanton frivolity would have to be one of NYC famed  biergartens. I am going to list them below. Let me know which one you think  I’d have the best time at.

Awesome Biergartens in NYC

Radegast Hall and Biergarten

Some reviews

Here’s an authentic beer garden that’s actually worth the shlep to Williamsburg, an out-of-the-way joint where hundreds of 20-somethings congregate nightly to guzzle hops, pig out on wienerschnitzel, and gyrate to a rotating roster of New Orleans-style and swing bands likewise comprising very young players. – WSJ

Williamsburg’s Austro-Hungarian beer hall serves a deep selection of imported brews and Hofbräuhaus-style brats one block and half a hemisphere off the Bedford Avenue drag. Slovakian-born partners Ivan Kohut and Andy Ivanov gutted adjacent warehouses to create two distinct drinking spaces. The garden side boasts a retractable roof under which a grill man serves up sizzling meats and savory fries gobbled up at the long rows of wooden benches. Inside the “hall,” patrons line the hand-hewn tables made from 150-year-old barn logs. Thirteen drafts on tap and 58 beers by the bottle can be ordered at the polygonal red-oak bar or from one of the waitresses, who are occasionally cinched into full beer-wench regalia. Here, rib-clinging grub, whipped up by Ivan’s wife and executive chef Joanna, includes veal schnitzel, stuffed blintzes, and a scrape-the-plate-delicious apple strudel. – NYMAG

Another MrMary Sighting on 828 Broadway @ TheStrand

The Strand Bookstore

The Strand Bookstore is an independent bookstore located at 828 Broadway at the corner of East 12th St) in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, near Union Square. The Strand advertises that it has “18 Miles of Books”, and is well-known among New Yorkers for its collection of publishers’ overstock, used, rare, and out-of-print books, as well as the chaos on and around its shelves. The store houses the city’s largest collection of rare books, and is also a contender for the title of world’s largest used bookstore, its major competitor in this regard being Powell’s Books of Portland, Oregon.

We caught up with a busy MrMary Yesterday night coming out of The Strand. he was carrying with him  the following books by David Foster Wallace:

The Broom of the System

Infinite Jest

He sat down with us for a brief moment, on the condition that we would get him something from the Wafle and Dinges Truck and we sat down on the benches right outside the dog run in union square.

The Interview

Interview Lady: So MrMary, what brings you here, to this neck of the woods
MrMary: Well to be honest, you pretty much answered your question, you know… neck and wood etc
Interview Lady: I dont get it
MrMary: That’s a shame, such a pretty lady……  does your husband work many hours, leaving you home alone with a cold dinner and the bitter sweet taste of nostalgia on your lips
Interview Lady: Uh.. uhm… so (awkward pause) about the Strand  do you come here often ?
MrMary: There is only one place in the city where MrMary goes to appease his insatiable hunger, and since he doesn’t smoke afterwards he walks a few blocks from this chicks apartment and gets books to read.
Interview Lady: Uhm… ok that’s weird… doesn’t she have books at her apartment
MrMary: Yeah she has the standard stuff that will make her look educated to her fucktard NYU friends… The Sunday NY Times is on her coffee table, The Essays of Montaigne, The Alchemist and Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho, and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Tropic Cancer etc….
InterviewLady: I don’t know what to say
MrMary: No one does, which is why I read. The nature of life today is that of isolation, our technological advances only serve to exacerbate this sort of dismal state, I find that good literature can  serve to in a way set up a makeshift bridge that can momentarily lead out of isolation into the domain of real human experience which is inclusive, accepting of diversity and transcendental at the same time
InterviewLady: Wow….
MrMary: Hows that for a sound byte… it’s not all dick jokes… Thanks for the Waffle and Dinge stuff.. and if you are going to wear a ring to deter guys from flirting with you you should really not smile so much and be so visibly optimistic. You need to look a bit unhappy, frustrated, yet comfortable since you do wear  granny panties …..
Interview Lady: How did you know?
MrMary: Life’s but a walking shadow, and I have the flashlight and the tube sock ….

Another MrMary Sighting: Phobang Vietnamese Restaurant 4107 Kissena Blvd Flushing,

Little did we know that  MrMary was such a big fan of pho. For those of you who don’t know pho

is a Vietnamese noodle soup, usually served with beef (phở bò) or chicken (phở gà). The soup includes noodles made from rice flour and is often served with Asian basil, saw tooth herb, rau om (rice paddy herb), cilantro, thinly sliced green onion, lime juice, and bean sprouts that are added to the soup by the person who is dining.

While MrMary’s favorite pho place is in Chinatown, the beautiful weather in Queens over the weekend made him forego the long trip and go to (depending on who you ask) the best Pho place in Downtown Flushing; Phobang Restaurant.

PhoBang Restaurant

I like this place. The focus and emphasis here is clearly on the food.  There are no bright lights  and all this extra fanfare. I have a rule,we can call it MrMary’s rule for restaurants: basically if people of that nationality are going there to eat it then its good. I would never go to a restaurant that specialised in Haitian food  unless I saw and heard that from Haitian that they go there when they want a taste of home and are too tired or busy to cook. This place was recommended to me by  a Vietnamese friend. Though his mother and grandmother make a better pho they are not close by and this place brings him back. It may feel uncomfortable at first and depending on how authentic it is you may have to bring someone who can translate for you (e.g I have been to Haitian places the server speaks only Kreyol, so is the menu etc)

All that bullshit aside Phobang has really great pho. The broth is clear and flavourful but not to fatty at all. No one spice over powers the others they each have a role to be played. You can taste the star anise, the ginger, the cardamom, cilantro and green onion. The cut of beef was the eye of round which is great. Their Bahh Mi is supposedly very good but I come here exclusively when I want my fill out pho. I personally like to add a bit of the hoisin, Siracha Rooster Sauce also know as COCK sauce. I like it spicy so the more cock the better. Of course I like all the accoutrements the Mung bean sprouts, the lemon, the  thai basil.

And there it is folks

There is it folks, words from the famed blogger himself. From what MrMary has told us:

  1. Dont’ let the reviews on Yelp scare you or discourage you from going. This place is not dirty,
  2. The wait staff is cool and fair
  3. If you’re a hipster or foodie, or some douche bag who thinks their special, done come here, go to hell. If you must come show some respect to the locals, the cuisine and the people putting up with your sneering.
  4. You always can use more cock ..sauce that is

Another MrMary Sighting on 320 East 86th Street @ City Swiggers

It is the fifth time in as many days that the beer-swilling blogging phenom has been sighted at City Swiggers. What is City Swiggers you say? Well according to what MrMary himself told me:

“it is the only place large enough other than your mother’s box that can satisfy my craving and insatiable thirst…. for beer

City Swiggers

For those of you who don’t know about City Swiggers

We’re a beer store and a beer bar in one. We have 30 seats with tables for those who want to enjoy a pint or a flight on premises. And we have about 600 beers in bottles (to go) on the shelves. Check out our tap list, above–at this Web page–or on the white board on the wall near the bar in the store. As for the bottles, we have domestic beers in the front (west wall, sorted by region/brewery) and imports and ciders in the back. The cooler has a little of everything, sorted by style.

MrMary’s Guide to enjoying City Swiggers

We were able to cajole MrMary into giving us his definitive guide to understanding City Swiggers:

  1. Don’t come in and try to show off your infinite knowledge of beer and make recommendation to strangers you dont even know. Also leave the guys behind the counter alone. They do not want to discuss hops with you or how double IPA‘s  are flooding  the markets, your stupid bathroom|kitchen home brew. Just Shut the Fuck up and let everyone drink in peace
  2. If you say things like:” Sometimes you just got to have a stout”, or anything stupid like that you should go drink sewage wwater with the other hipsters.

with that said

The staff is very knowledgeable and they have been great about helping me deciding what new beer to take home. They have a board on the wall with what is on tap. You can also find out what is on tap by checking out their website. Everything is pretty self explanatory. They have beer on the shelves in the front and back. it is a very impressive variety I might add. The ambiance is nice too. I would expect it being the upper east side that snob well to people, or people who aren’t as well to do but snobby would dominant this scene but every time I have been there it was quite enjoyable .

This specific Neighborhood Yorkville used to be home to many German and Eastern European immigrants. At one point in the past there were many beer halls here so there is a historic precedent I feel for City Swiggers. It’s been amazing every time Ive been there. All the beers I have reviewed I’ve bought here and its a win win.

Another MrMary Sighting on 251 East Houston Street @ Gaia Italian Cafe

Everyone’s  favourite star blogger was spotted the other day exiting Gaia Italian’s Cafe on Houston Street. We were able to get a few words from him on things in general and his Dining experience at Gaia.

I blame  unlimited bread sticks and salad  for the fact that many people think that the Olive Garden makes real Italian Food. When I want real authentic Italian food, I usually call up this Italian girl I used to day  name  Gina. Gentlemanly tryst aside,  Gina cannot cook worth a damn so when I want to eat real Italian food I go to Gaia. This is as authentic and real as Italian food gets, and the dinning experience is amazing. I forget her name but the lady in charge is very nice and approachable, and how could she not be with that gorgeous Milanese accent. I ordered today the bufala mozzarella with tomatoes in pesto sauce as an appetizer and then went on to the house lasagna. Ive yet to order something I didn’t thoroughly enjoy the panini, the cold cuts, the ricotta and spinach gnocchi, everything.  I am happy to recommend this place to any and everyone. A few blocks up is a great gelato place, I’m going go get some and then call Gina, since I have eat out already might as go there and stay in ;-) -

There You have it folks from the mouth of the self proclaimed gifted Horse part.

Follow Up

We took the advise of the gifted horse’s ass and tried the place.  You can tell from the smell of fresh basil that there is an emphasis on fresh ingredients. The mozzarella is flown in weekly from Italy as is the Salumi. The bread is baked fresh every morning. The staff is passionate about the food and it shows in the taste, the balance of textures and flavors in the meal and of course the  ambiance. You have to try it
